Print | 11: Exposing Separations for Repeat Length | Next >>
Basic rules can be applied when using the Exposure table. Listed below are the step by step rules which if followed should help you achieve a safe and successful exposure.

1. Check that your screens are completely dry. Check glass is clean.

2. Place screen mesh side up onto the glass with bolt holders facing towards you.

3. Place separation painted/emulsion side down onto the mesh with registration line towards the bolt holders.

4. Check that all the image area is on a coated area of mesh and that there is at least 40 to 50mm of emulsion out with the design area on the separation. Try to leave a larger space between the image and inside of screen at the bolt holder end of screen than the opposite end. This will create a comfortable area for pouring dye onto the screen when printing.

5. With bolt holders facing towards you, place the edge of the lined register sheet flush with the outside edge of the screen, then carefully lift the separation and place it on top on the lined register sheet. Now look at your registration line on your separation, it should be running roughly parallel to one of the lines on the lined register sheet, move your separation until your registration line on your separation is lined up exactly with the nearest line on the lined register sheet.

6. Remember which line you have used on the lined register sheet as you will use this line for ALL other separations in your design.

7. Double check that all the image area is on a coated area of mesh and that there is at least 40 to 50mm of emulsion out with the design area on the separation.

8. Sellotape separation to screen. Turn screen over to face glass, place screen in centre of exposure table, put small vacuum tube inside the screen.

9. Close vacuum frame starting with front clamps then side clamps.

10. Switch vacuum on at wall & exposure table.

11. When a good vacuum is created, hold on to exposure table and release brake downwards, carefully swing glass to vertical position. Pull up brake gently to lock table in position.

12. Expose screen.

13. After exposure hold on to exposure table and release brake downwards, carefully swing glass to horizontal position and pull up brake gently to lock table in position.

14. Switch off vacuum at exposure table and wall.

15. Open vacuum frame starting with side clamps first then front clamps.

16. Remove the tube, and lift the screen carefully off the exposure table remove your separation and wash out immediately.
