Melanie Bergman I have a fairly mixed background within academia and industry. I first completed a combined degree at the University of Calgary, which included a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and a BA in English Literature. To finance myself through these degrees, I worked primarily in the oil industry. In my summer jobs, I focused on two-phase flow (oil-water) in horizontal wells. I worked with the reservoir team at Shell's research center in Calgary (CRC) and also with Department of Petroleum Geology at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) in Trondheim. I then decided to change the focus of my career with postgraduate studies at the Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering at University of Aberdeen. My Master's thesis focused on assessment of postural control in the elderly. After completion of my MSc, I started lecturing here at RGU in control and dynamics. I am currently working on a project entitled "Lifestyle Modelling for Insulin Dependent Diabetic Patients". It is a cross-disciplinary project which involves Electrical Engineering, Computer and Math Sciences, Food and Consumer Studies, Pharmacy, and Mechanical and Offshore Engineering. The aim of this project is to forecast continuous bloodsugar levels based on the input of a diabetic patient's insulin dose, food intake, activity, and periodic blood glucose readings. These bloodsugar forecasts could be used to help diabetics make decisions concerning insulin dose adjustments for particular meals or activities. Melanie has now moved to New Zealand where she is continuing her PhD research.
