Linda Carles I got a Licence in Physics Applied to Ocean and Atmosphere in France. Then, after falling in love with Scotland, I did my Msc in Marine Resource Management at the Institute of Offshore Engineering (Heriot-Watt). Now, I am doing a Ph.D. in the Flow-modeling of the dispersion of drilling wastes from offshore installations in the North Sea at the School of Mechanical and Offshore Engineering (Robert Gordon). For this study, I have created a database correlating the drill-cuttings characteristics and the drilling parameters. The final stage of the project is to model the dispersion of the wastes in the sea using a commercial CFD package called CFX 4.2 (AEA Technology). I cmpleted by PhD in 2000. My supervisers were Prof. I. Bryden and Dr B. Oyeneyin. The project involved laboratory experiments and an offshore survey to determine the drill-cuttings characteristics and the drilling parameters. Then, using Excel, a database was created with the appropriate correlations. For the modeling side, the physical processes involved in the dispersion are defined and introduced in the CFD model. The database is also included in the model using UNIX commands. The model was validated using seabed survey data from offshore installations in the North Sea.
