Personal Statement
My work with postgraduate students over many years has allowed me to explore my interest in project development. I learned from my own early experience of research that the necessary development of systematic approaches can initially be inhibiting to an artist or designer more used to a relatively unstructured method of working. Nevertheless, I have found conducting research for many years a very creative and innovative activity, although the accountability required can be demanding.
In my current research projects I am continuing a long-term investigation of drawing in its role of facilitating the design process and am adopting a range of both tried-and-tested and relatively new research methods. The emphasis on exploring commercial practice remains but a more in-depth study of individual designers takes over from the broader surveys of my earlier work.
My RAE research outputs contribute to the Art and Design Pedagogy thematic.
