ISOBEL MOWAT

Biographical Statement

Isobel Mowat studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee (1987-1990) and Central St. Martins, London (1990-1992). She then worked as a designer in Italy for two years before returning to London to become Head of Knitwear for Hussein Chalayan. This led to Head of Knitwear for Alexander McQueen Womanswear and Menswear and Givenchy Couture. In 2001 she returned to Scotland to set up her own label and won “rail track fashion designer of the year” exhibiting at London and Paris Fashion Weeks. She is currently a lecturer in Fashion and Textiles at Gray’s School of Art.

Personal Statement

As a relatively new member of staff, I am recasting my identity as a solo designer/maker by rethinking my practice (design, production and marketing) to evolve the concept of 'sustainable, indigenous designer'. This is a critical response to certain aspects of the fashion industry.
