Prof JULIAN MALINS

Biographical Statement
Julian Malins originally studied ceramics at Epsom School of Art. He ran his own studio ceramics business initially in Surrey and later in North Devon (1976-1985) before returning to higher education to study at Harrow College of HE and South Glamorgan Institute of HE. He completed his PhD entitled ‘The Monitoring and Control of Specialist Ceramic Kiln Atmospheres and Emissions’ in 1993 at RGU. He then continued to undertake post-doctoral research at RGU. He is a Senior Lecturer and an experienced supervisor and examiner of higher degrees. Julian has been Project Leader for a number of externally funded research projects including projects funded by the AHRC and the ADM-HEA. He is currently Professor of Design and Research Student Co-ordinator at Gray’s School of Art. His published papers cover a broad range of topics including approaches to research in art and design, virtual learning environments and collaborative design.

Personal Statement
Julian’s research interests in recent years have focused on the development of accessible computer-based resources and environments that promote collaborative and constructivist approaches to learning. Working collaboratively with RGU colleagues (with expertise in computing, psychology, design practice, on-line education) he has investigated pedagogic approaches and learning environments that take advantage of computer-mediated technologies yet strongly respond to the specific experiential nature of art and design education. This research includes the critical analyses of existing VLEs to enable the development and testing of alternatives more fitted to practice-driven learning e.g. collaborative design environments, drawing on Liapis’ doctoral work (completed 2007). Within such VLEs on-line Personal Development Planning (PDP) has been tested and critiqued as a viable reflective and envisioning tool.

Julian’s RAE research outputs contribute to the Art and Design Pedagogy thematic.

External Networks
Julian is an Executive Committee member of the European Academy of Design (www.ead.lancs.ac.uk).
