Prof STUART MACDONALD

Biographical Statement
Prof. Stuart MacDonald OBE is Head of Gray’s School of Art, The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Previously, he was Director of The Lighthouse, Scotland's National Centre for Architecture and Design, which was a case-study exemplar of an international innovation centre in the recent CoxReview of Creativity in Business commissioned by HM Treasury. He led the £13million development and opening of The Lighthouse during
Glasgow's reign as UK City of Architecture and Design, 1999. He studied fine art at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen and later completed a PhD at the Architecture School of the University of Liverpool.

Personal Statement
MacDonald’s research is focused on the public realm, at the interface between art, design and environment. His work investigates the social, economic and cultural impacts and policies that affect the above relationship, as well as cultural and public value as processes that can enable artists and designers to widen their engagement, particularly through exhibitions and new educational practices. He has been closely involved with the development of Creative and Cultural Industries policy and associated developments in Scotland such as the Six Cities Design Festival.
