Personal Statement

My research contributes to two of the School's research thematics - Challeging Making and Art and Design Pedagogy. I have contributed to conference papers and exhibitions nationally and internationally. In relation to pedagogic research topics have included: Promoting Teaching and Learning Enhancement; The Scottish Experience in the new QAA methodology – Art and Design Benchmarking; Transitions in Higher Education - The relationship between aspirations of students entering Higher Education in Art and Craft areas and the opportunities awaiting them at graduation; Transferable Skills in Art and Design; The role of the External Examiner; Four year programmes and the foundation year in the Scottish System, and Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Supporting Year 1 students.

In relation to Challenging Making my inquiry and related body of drawing have emerged from an early research cluster - Drawing Out Digital Media - concerned with the exploration of digital media as extending, adding value to traditional printmaking processes. I challenge the implicit restrictions and status of digital processes, appropriating their inherent quality by combining them with the handmade. I have explored this by observing transformation through climate change and human intervention within the North East landscape of Scotland. This work has been recognised internationally, including my selection for the Krakow Print Triennial in which I was one of only six UK selected artists.
