CRAIG ELLIS

Biographical Statement

After graduating from Gray’s in 1991 Craig Ellis spent 6 years based in Glasgow working from a studio in the East end as well as other locations around the city. He worked both within the community and as an exhibiting artist. This lead to a series of residencies (e.g. Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Lumsden) and commissions (JS Sainsbury), which brought Craig back to Aberdeen where he studied for an MA and commenced lecturing. His current role is programme Leader - First Year Studies.

Personal Statement

My interests are in the areas of Sculpture and contemporary Fine Art practice with emphasis on making as thinking and the relationship between object and viewer, specifically linguistic catergorisation and the definition of differences between similar things.  Elements of my work have been exploring the way this use of language relates to the way we perceive our environment. Piggybacking on this main idea is an exploration of choice, incremental change and evolution. Through documenting objects as scale models the process of making has produced a series of issues that may, or may not be related:

  • The relationship between skill and reality
  • The relationship between simulation and reality
  • The gap between simulacra and referent
  • Scale, perception, communication and gender related play.

Pedagogically my interests are in student induction and the Transition into HE as well as the specific first year experience in relation to the overall student journey.
