IAN CARGILL
Biographical
Statement
After graduating in Design and Craft at Grays School of Art, Ian ran a design studio in educational television, then worked as a creative director and design consultant before joining the staff as Subject Leader in Graphic Design in 1986.
As a practicing designer, Ian has been responsible for a number of University design projects during this perod including numerous prospectuses, national exhibitions and publications. Following a period as designer in charge of the University Corporate Identity Programme Ian established and ran a commercial design consultancy within Grays School of Art. As Course Development Leader for the BDes (Hons) Graphic Design course, he was responsible for designing the course and is currently the Subject Leader. Ian has also contributed to conference papers both nationally and internationally.

Personal Statement
Research in design management issues during the period as director of the design consultancy has continued with the development and testing of a web-based project management tool. In parallel with this I continue to develop my work in box constructions. These began as an antidote to graphic design and in a way a reference to the influence of Fred Stiven who had been both my lecturer at Grays and then Head of Design when I joined the staff. Despite an initial intention not to pursue this particular form beyond the first tribute construction it proved too tempting a means of expression to leave at this point. The boxes have developed as encapsulated narratives, firstly with reference to characters then to expressions of the North-East coast through the use of found material. Recent work has explored more mechanical and repetitive themes through the incorporation of CNC manufactured elements.
