Gray’s School of Art has an established track record developing research at doctoral and post doctoral levels. It is currently focusing on this development as part of its strategic development within the Robert Gordon University (RGU).

Gray’s research has pioneered methodologies of practice-led research over two decades working closely with the art, design and cultural sectors, their organizations, institutions and issues. The research culture is positioned within networks of academic and non academic partners regionally, nationally and internationally.

Since 2009 RGU has developed new research infrastructure to enhance its interdisciplinary research capabilities. Gray's research is now under the theme Creativity, Design and Innovation (CDI) within the Institute for Innovation, Design, & Sustainability Research (IDEAS), Director Susan Craw. This Institute encompasses researchers from Art & Design, Architecture and Built Environment, Computer Science and Engineering. Postgraduate research is a priority area of development, supported by the IDEAS Graduate School.

Current research within the CDI theme examines the changing role of the artist and designer in response to organizational, environmental and economic challenges. There are three main research groups.
