Statement A painting is not a soapbox, nor is it a storybook. It need not be clever or entirely original. These intentions could distract from the spectacle of a painting: the colour, balance, form, technique, composition and contrasts. This spectacle may be hollow or pointless, but through these aspects such a painting may very well be considered a spectacle.
