Title - The Button Jar
Statement
Storytelling has been my main stimulus this year, in particular everyday stories and their tellers. Culture, memory and identity all influence us in how we tell tales, often leading to alterations. Everyday tales tend to be dramatised and embellished by the teller, blurring the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction. Using images from my childhood and everyday tales mixed with heightened colour and pockets of detail, I have hoped to re-create this pictorially.
Through wishing to convey this sense of blurring reality and fantasy, I've also looked at traditional fairytales and the elements they contain. Using darker imagery I have strived to achieve a macabre undercurrent in each piece, which is reminiscent of traditional fables. |
